Applying for a U.S. visa involves several important steps, and one document that often gets overlooked is the DS-160 Confirmation Page. Many applicants focus on preparing for their visa interview but forget that this confirmation page is a mandatory document required throughout the application process.
Whether you’re applying for a USA visitor visa, USA student visa, or another non-immigrant visa category, understanding the importance of the DS-160 confirmation page can help you avoid unnecessary delays and appointment issues.
What Is the DS-160 Confirmation Page?
The DS-160 confirmation page is generated after you successfully submit your Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application (DS-160). It contains your personal details along with a unique barcode that links directly to your visa application.
This barcode serves as your application’s identification number and is used by U.S. immigration officials to access your submitted information during the visa process.
Once your DS-160 form is submitted, you must download and print the confirmation page for future use.
Why Is the DS-160 Confirmation Page Important?
The confirmation page is required at multiple stages of your U.S. visa application process, including:
- Biometrics (ASC) appointment
- Visa interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate
- Verification of your application details
- Matching your appointment profile with your submitted application
Without a valid DS-160 confirmation page, you may not be allowed to proceed with your scheduled appointments.
How to Retrieve Your DS-160 Confirmation Page
If you’ve already submitted your DS-160 form but cannot find your confirmation page, don’t worry. You can retrieve it online by following these simple steps:
Step 1: Visit the DS-160 Portal
Go to the official Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application (DS-160) website.
Step 2: Select Your Embassy or Consulate
Choose the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you plan to attend your visa interview.
Step 3: Click “Retrieve an Application”
Locate and select the “Retrieve an Application” option.
Step 4: Enter Your Application ID

Step 7: Save and Print

Common Mistakes Applicants Make
Many visa applicants face avoidable issues due to minor errors on their DS-160 confirmation page.
Barcode Mismatch
One of the most common reasons applicants are turned away is a barcode mismatch.
The barcode number on your printed DS-160 confirmation page must exactly match the barcode linked to your visa appointment profile. Even a small difference can create problems on the day of your appointment.
Always double-check the barcode before attending your biometrics or visa interview.
Trying to Edit a Submitted DS-160
Once a DS-160 form has been submitted, it cannot be edited.
If you discover an error after submission, you must:
- Complete a new DS-160 form.
- Obtain a new Application ID and barcode.
- Update the new DS-160 number in your appointment profile.
Ignoring this step may lead to processing delays or interview complications.
Not Printing a Clear Copy
The barcode on the confirmation page must be clearly visible and readable. Faded or blurry printouts can cause scanning issues at the visa center.
Always print a high-quality copy and keep a digital backup.
What Information Appears on the Confirmation Page?
Many applicants assume that the confirmation page contains all the answers they entered in the DS-160 form. In reality, it only displays:
- Your basic personal details
- Application ID number
- Unique barcode
- Confirmation of successful submission
The complete application responses are stored electronically and can be accessed by visa officers during your interview.
Tips for a Smooth U.S. Visa Application Process
To avoid last-minute stress:
- Save your DS-160 Application ID in a secure place.
- Keep both digital and printed copies of your confirmation page.
- Verify that the barcode matches your appointment profile.
- Review all information carefully before submitting the DS-160 form.
- Carry the confirmation page to every visa-related appointment.
